As I celebrate the third anniversary of my album Country So Fresh You Have To Check Your Boots, I thought it might be a good time to share a little about the record that many listeners may not know.
One thing I’ve always been careful about as a songwriter is telling people what they should take away from a song. Once a song is released, it belongs as much to the listener as it does to the writer. I want people to hear my music through the lens of their own experiences, memories, and emotions. What a song means to me may not be what it means to you, and that’s part of the magic of music.
Over the years, however, many folks have asked about this album in particular. Some have wondered about the meanings behind the songs. During the recording process, my producer and friend Dan even stopped at one point and asked, “Mike, is everything okay?”
The short answer is yes.
The longer answer is that while the songs on this album stand on their own, together they tell a larger story.
Like all of my albums, every song was written by me. While the record isn’t autobiographical, it draws from my memories, observations, experiences, and the stories I’ve witnessed throughout my life. That’s true of all my songwriting. I take pieces of reality, imagination, and human nature and weave them together into stories.
What emerged on Country So Fresh You Have To Check Your Boots was the journey of a man wrestling with a midlife crisis.
The album begins with reflection. Memories surface and reappear throughout the record like old photographs scattered across a kitchen table. The protagonist looks back at the choices he’s made, the roads he took, and the roads he left unexplored. As the story unfolds, those reflections give way to dissatisfaction. He begins to wonder what might have been, and temptation starts to creep into the picture.
As the album progresses, he makes decisions that take him away from the life he knows. He chases something he believes will bring happiness or fulfillment. Instead, he discovers that every choice comes with consequences. Along the way, he leans on memories, substances, nostalgia, and even the healing power of nature as he tries to make sense of where he is and how he got there.
What I find interesting is that listeners often connect with different parts of the journey. Some hear the longing. Some hear the regret. Others hear hope, resilience, or redemption. That’s one of the reasons this album remains special to me three years after its release.
The songs may tell the story of one fictional man, but the emotions are universal. Most of us have looked back at some point and wondered about the choices we’ve made. Most of us have faced disappointment, temptation, loss, or uncertainty. And hopefully, most of us have found a way to keep moving forward.
Three years later, I’m still incredibly proud of this record. It contains some of my favorite songwriting, some wonderful performances from the musicians who helped bring these songs to life, and a story that continues to reveal itself every time I listen back.
If you’ve never heard Country So Fresh You Have To Check Your Boots, now is a great time to give it a listen. And if it’s been a while since you’ve spun the record, I invite you to revisit it from beginning to end. Listen for the thread that ties the songs together and see what story you discover for yourself.
After all, the best songs don’t just tell a story—they help us find pieces of our own.
