If you’ve been following my music for a while, you know I love writing songs that tell stories, celebrate country living, and reflect the people and places that have shaped my life.
If you’re just discovering me, welcome! I’m Mike Kuster, an independent country singer-songwriter from Frederick County, Maryland. I’ve spent years writing original songs, recording in Nashville, playing shows, and sharing my music with country fans near and far.
Now I’m competing in the 2026 Next Music Star contest, and I’d love your help getting to the next round.
One of the best ways to get to know an artist is through the songs themselves. So, before you cast your free daily vote, here are five songs I’d love for you to hear.
1. “So I Won’t” — A New Chapter in My Country Music Journey
Listen to “So I Won’t” on Bandcamp
Every new song is another opportunity to reach somebody who hasn’t heard my music before. “So I Won’t” is one of my latest releases, and it represents the continuing journey of an independent artist who isn’t ready to stop chaasing the dream.
The song reached Number One on the Independent Music Network Country Chart in September 2026, marking my 15th Number One single on independent country radio charts. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has listened, requested my songs, and helped spread the word.
If you’re new to my music, give this one a listen and see what you think!
2. “Corn Fed” — Country Roots and Small-Town Pride
Listen to “Corn Fed” on Bandcamp
Country music and rural life go together like a front porch and a rocking chair. “Corn Fed” celebrates the country upbringing, small-town values, and rural way of life that have always been part of my world.
With an upbeat groove and a healthy dose of country attitude, this song shows the fun side of my songwriting. It’s a good introduction for anyone who enjoys a lively country tune with a strong sense of place.
Growing up on a small farm in Frederick County helped shape who I am, and those roots continue to find their way into my music.
3. “Fifty” — A Little Reflection on Life’s Fast Ride
Turning 50 gives you plenty to think about. Where did the years go? What have you learned? And why does time seem to move faster the older you get?
I wrote “Fifty” to reflect on reaching that milestone and realizing just how quickly life passes. It’s personal, but I suspect the feelings behind it are familiar to plenty of people who’ve watched the years fly by.
The song also earned a 2025 Josie Music Awards nomination for Male Country Song of the Year.
For me, songwriting has always been about taking something from real life and turning it into a song that somebody else can connect with. “Fifty” is a great example of that.
4. “Distant Trains” — My Bluegrass Side
Listen to “Distant Trains” on Bandcamp
Although traditional country is at the heart of what I do, I’ve always had a love for bluegrass music, too. Some of my songs start out with a bluegrass sound in my head, and “Distant Trains” gave me the opportunity to explore that side of my musical roots.
The track was produced by Grammy and International Bluegrass Music Association award winner Michael Cleveland, whose musicianship helped bring this song to life.
If you love acoustic instruments, bluegrass traditions, and country storytelling, I hope you’ll give this one a listen.
It’s another reminder that independent country music can embrace a wide range of sounds while staying true to its roots.
5. “Back to Feagaville” — A Song with Maryland Roots
Find “Back to Feagaville” and more music on my website
I’m proud to call Frederick County, Maryland, home. The places we grow up, the people we meet, and the memories we make can leave a lasting mark on us.
“Back to Feagaville” brings that hometown connection into my music. It’s a song for anyone who’s ever felt a pull toward familiar roads, old memories, and the places that helped make them who they are.
I’ve always believed that songs about specific places can speak to something universal. You don’t have to be from Maryland to understand the feeling of wanting to go back home.
If you enjoy country music with a strong sense of place, this is one to add to your listening list.
