Written during one of the most challenging periods of his life, “She’s My Reason For Going Home” was born out of fear, heartbreak, and unwavering devotion. When Kuster’s son suffered a serious accident, his wife Emily collapsed in the hospital shortly after, leaving doctors stumped and Kuster struggling to keep his family afloat amid tragedy. As Emily’s health declined and the couple navigated the additional grief of losing her mother, Mike faced long days at the hospital and lonely nights at home. In a conversation with a friend, he admitted that returning home each night was only bearable because of Emily—his high school sweetheart and wife of over three decades.
“She asked me how I was holding up, and I told her I had to force myself to go home,” says Kuster. “When she asked why, I said, ‘She’s my reason for going home.’ She looked at me and said, ‘Mike, that sounds like a song.’ And through the tears, I wrote it.”
Thankfully, Emily recovered, and the song stands as a testament to their enduring love and strength in the face of overwhelming adversity. Kuster’s signature sincerity, rich storytelling, and warm vocals are on full display in this track, continuing his legacy of writing music that strikes straight to the heart.
