There are nights that remind me exactly why I do this.
This past weekend at Tickler’s Crab Shack on Tilghman Island was one of those nights. Looking out across the crowd, I saw people from all walks of life—locals, visitors, families, couples, and friends—all coming together to enjoy a summer evening on the Eastern Shore. That’s one of the things I love most about playing live music. No matter where people come from, good songs have a way of bringing everyone together.
One of the highlights of the night was the song requests. Folks wanted to hear classics from Willie Nelson, David Allan Coe, Alan Jackson, and Shenandoah. Those are artists whose music has stood the test of time, and it’s always a pleasure to share those songs with an audience that knows every word.
As the evening went on, the atmosphere just kept getting better. Kids were dancing in front of me, adults were singing along, and every song seemed to create another shared moment. Even when it came time for the night to end and the staff was getting ready to close down, people were still asking for one more song. As a performer, there’s no better compliment than hearing that your audience isn’t ready for the music to stop.
What makes nights like that so meaningful isn’t just the applause or the requests—it’s the connection. Every show is an opportunity to meet new people, reconnect with familiar faces, and share stories through music. Whether someone has followed my music for years or just stumbled onto the show while visiting Tilghman Island, those moments of connection are what make every mile traveled and every hour on stage worthwhile.
One audience moment in particular reminded me why I continue to write and perform country music. Seeing people genuinely connect with the songs—whether through a smile, a singalong, or simply being present with the music—is something I’ll never take for granted. Those moments stay with me long after the last note fades.
If you’ve been thinking about coming out to a show, I’d love to see you. Bring your family, bring some friends, make a request, sing along, and don’t be a stranger after the music ends. Some of my favorite conversations happen after I step off the stage.
